George "Macaca" Allen is going to support Fred "Grandpa" Thompson for president.

Fred Thompson's campaign will announce this morning their "National Campaign Leadership Team."

Among the four chairs -- former Sen. George Allen (Va.).

The one-time presidential hopeful has had warm things to say about Thompson since the Tennessean first considered a bid this summer, and recently had his former colleague on while guest-hosting a radio show in Richmond.

It's fitting that Allen would back Thompson. They occupy much of the same space politically -- folksy Southern mainstream conservative -- and Fred got in the race in no small part because Allen's absence created a vacuum for a candidate with such qualities.

Thompson's other national chairs are already-announced supporters: former Sen. Howard Baker, former Sen. Spencer Abraham and Liz Cheney.

I can tell where this is going right now - in the macaca history books....

Mean old Markos slams Macaca Wadhams

CO-03, CO-07: On the flipside, Republicans can't find a single soul to take on Democratic Reps. Salazar and Perlmutter, despite representing competitive districts. Colorado party chief Dick Wadhams -- yeah, the guy who helped Macaca Allen crash and burn -- can't even bother to try and choke out some positive spin.

Dick Wadhams, the Colorado Republican Party chairman, did not attempt to put on overly optimistic spin on his party's prospects in the 3rd and 7th districts. He said he would like to have candidates already, and does not know what will emerge in either district. He attributed the absence of Republican candidates to the difficulty of facing an incumbent.

I object to calling George Allen "Macaca". Surely he wasn't stupid enough to say that without his campaign chief's approval. But I'll give Markos a pass, and read his site every day for posts just like this. Ha!

After operating more than $500,000 in the red for nearly the last year, the Colorado Republican Party tried last week to move toward the black with a fundraiser hosted by Bruce "Battery" Benson. Unfortunately for the party, even though the fundraiser was apparently successful, a previously unknown debt of more than $100,000 was discovered tucked away in a corner of the office. Worse yet, former Colorado GOP Executive Director Hans Gullickson's filing system evidently consisted of stuffing papers wherever he could, so the additional $100,000 could be just the beginning.
So, what is a party that has hovered at a half-million dollars in debt, without signs of erasing it anytime soon, to do? Well, with new Colorado GOP Chairman/Executive Director Dick Wadhams firing but not replacing the field staff and keeping - of all the idiots to work for state party - Cameron "Peekaboo" Lynch, the party doesn't have much to work with or look forward to. No grassroots network or staff to build the party. No chance of winning back the Legislature next year. No candidates to contest races in the 2nd, 3rd and 7th congressional districts. A primary in the 5th Congressional District. No exciting candidate for U.S. Senate, and no winning staff to help him. No presidential caucus or primary. No message. No agenda. No stop to the liberals laughing it up. One could be forgiven for thinking the party might as well close up shop and hope someone picks up the pieces, because nobody's going to send this party checks if it doesn't get its act together soon.
Granted, Wadhams managed to fly in Dick Cheney for a party fundraiser...a fundraiser consisting of twenty whole guests. This quickly answers the question of how many people are left in Colorado who really want to rub shoulders with Dick Cheney: not even two dozen.

I guess the crap is flowing.

Those numbers are epically bad. Yeah, we need to guard against getting too cocky, but still, Warner looks more like a safe incumbent than he does a challenger for a Republican-held open seat.

Look at the George "Macaca" Allen. He's the highest profile Republican in the state, and the one with the highest favorable/unfavorable ratings (40/34), and he still can't crack 40 percent.

Thank goodness Dick Wadhams is willing to yap his trap at any reporter with a pulse. That gives us a reason to remind the world about his greatest failure. Every.Single. Time.

The Iraq Trap: 37% Re-elect number for Republican Senators who support Bush

A trap is waiting for Republican incumbents and presidential contenders should they continue to back Bush on the Iraq war, according to a new poll by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. September might be their last chance to convince voters that they have truly rejected Bush’s strategy should he ask for more time based on General David Petraeus’ report on the 15th.

Oh, but there is an escape hatch for desperate Republicans:

“If the politicians don’t bring the troops home, the voters will bring the politicians home. Ultimately, Bush’s PR machine is no match for the news coming out of Iraq every day. Americans do not want to see their troops caught in the crossfires of a many-sided religious civil war that cannot be won by US military intervention,” said Tara McGuinness, Deputy Campaign Manager for Americans Against Escalation in Iraq.

What's the bottom line about Iraq?

“Iraq is the number one issue affecting how people plan to vote,” said Anna Greenberg, Senior Vice President at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner. Of the seven incumbent Republican senators up in 2008 from the states selected for the poll, she continued: “With a collective 37 percent reelect number, every one of these Republican senators could be at grave risk.”

What is Bob Schaffer's view on Iraq?

Schaffer staunchly backs George Bush's failed Iraq policy, as well as Bush's defeated plan to privatize Social Security. He voted against a bipartisan plan to secure our nation's airports after 9/11, supported an extreme water referendum that was overwhelmingly defeated by Colorado voters, and even praised a controversial college that bans interracial dating.

And what is the "good" news out of Iraq that Republicans who have to face voters in November, 2008?

This? Up to 500 dead in Northern Iraq bombing

This? Army suicides highest in 26 years

This? Surge Progress report to be written by White House

Or this? U.S. to label Iranian Guard "terrorist group"

None of the news is good for Bob Schaffer -- or Republicans in the Senate.

Will Colorado voters see Iraq as the issue it is today? Only time will tell. Until then, Bob Schaffer has a hell of a lot to think about as he tries to become a Republican senator in the Time of Bush.

What they can't do is run on principles, successful ideas, or ethical leaders.

We're going to be here to rebut crap like this:

Mark Udall's 2008 Senate bid will undoubtedly lead him and his campaign into the cesspool of the left-wing blogosphere, and his campaign manager's recent trip to the YearlyKos convention is a preview of the extremist viewpoints that Udall will take pains to avoid in the general election in his attempt to abandon his "liberal" image, even as he collects their money and pays lip-service to their demands.

Mark Udall should not be afraid to be called "liberal". It's the oldest trick in the Limbaugh Republicans' playbook.

And he definitely should not be afraid to be associated with Markos Moulitsas and DailyKos or YearlyKos. Many viewpoints, many types of organizations, the national press, the local Chicago press, local Colorado press, many progressive heroes and vital, prodigious liberals were also there.

And there wasn't even a single whiff of pot or Che t-shirt. Those are the facts.
